Türkiye’s former primer minister said he was not in favor of participating in the general election by being on CHP’s list of members of parliament.

The parliamentary and presidential elections took place last May in Türkiye, resulting in incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s victory.

“Participating in the election from CHP lists was my last choice,” said the leader of the Future Party, Ahmet Davutoğlu, who spoke to journalist Ruşen Çakır.

“I tried everything. I made an offer to the Good Party. I said, ‘Right-wing voters will not vote for the CHP, let’s be together’,” said Davutoğlu touching upon the election process and discussions about the parliamentary candidacy lists.

The table of six led by CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu could not obtain the majority in the parliament. Davutoğlu’s Future Party offered the Democracy and Progress (DEVA) Party and the Felicity Party to participate in the election under a joint list of MP candidates. Former Economy Minister Ali Babacan’s DEVA Party, however, opposed this proposal.

DEVA Party joined the elections from the CHP lists and won 15 seats. Future and Felicity secured 10 seats separately. The Democrat Party gained only 3 deputies.

Davutoğlu went on to say he made the greatest sacrifice, referring to the number of seats his party obtained.

Meanwhile, Future and Felicity formed a joint parliamentary group under the latter.
