Türkiye has extended an offer of assistance to Greece in combatting the ongoing wildfires in its neighboring country, according to Turkish diplomatic sources on Tuesday.

Turkish sources, who requested anonymity due to media communication constraints, have stated that Türkiye is fully prepared to provide aid to Greece.

This assistance includes the deployment of two aircraft, two helicopters, and a team of 60 ground support personnel to tackle the ongoing fires in the cities of Alexandroupolis and Rodopi

The sources further revealed that the offer was conveyed to Greek authorities on Monday.

Besides a wildfire that broke out on Saturday in the northeastern Alexandroupolis province, which has destroyed vast forest and agricultural areas, fires also erupted Monday in the northeastern regions of Kavala and Rodopi as well as on the Evia island and in the Boeotia province, both in the central part of the country, said state-run AMNA news agency.

18 people found dead

Bodies of 18 people have been found burned in Greece’s northeastern Evros region struck by a major wildfire, local media reported on Tuesday.

“18 people who probably entered our country illegally were cremated near the forest of Dadia,” Giannis Artofios, spokesman for the Greek fire department, was quoted as saying by public broadcaster ERT.

Search is continuing across the area where the bodies were found, the report added.

At least one physician and forensic experts are already on the scene, the broadcaster said.
