Russian fighter intercepts US surveillance planes over Black Sea

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet was scrambled to chase away two US reconnaissance planes that approached the Russian border over the Black Sea on Wednesday, news agencies cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying.

TWO PLANES HAD SUBSEQUENTLY TURNED AWAY FROM THE BORDER

“On August 5, Russian airspace control systems detected two air targets approaching the Russian state border over the neutral waters of the Black Sea,” the ministry’s broadcasting service said.

TASS news agency cited the defence ministry as saying the Su-27 had intercepted the RC-135 and Р-8А Poseidon planes.

“After the US reconnaissance planes turned away from the Russian state border, the Russian fighter returned to the airfield,” TASS said, adding that no violation of the Russian state border was allowed.
