Turkey is leader in Europe's livestock

Turkey leads all European countries in the number of cattle and ovine, according to official figures.

Turkey had 18.16 million head of cattle in 2020, with the closest EU member being France with 17.79 million, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) and the European Union’s statistical office Eurostat showed.

NUMBERS IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

Germany (11.3 million), Spain (6.6 million), Ireland (6.5 million), and Italy (6.4 million) were the other top countries in the EU, where the total number of cattle last year was 76.4 million.

Turkey’s overall ovine figure for 2020 was 54.1 million, including 42.13 million sheep.

EU countries collectively had 75 million, with Spain leading the count at 15.44 million, followed by Romania (10.46 million), Greece (8.26 million), France (7.3 million), Italy (7 million), and Ireland (3.87 million).
